Because of its double refraction, a special cut called a ‘Zircon cut’ was developed that features twice as many facets than a normal Round Brilliant Cut. This ensures an explosion of facets are visible when looking straight on into the gemstone. These cuts are often also more expensive than regular cuts. It almost looks out of focus when you see a picture of this cut, because of the Double Double refraction/cut.

Zircon
In 2014, a specimen of Zircon was found in Australia that was dated at 4.4 billion years old, almost as old as the Planet Earth. Zircon is a very underrated gemstone, as it was used in the 19th century as a cheaper alternative to Diamond, and more recently it has been confused with the lab manufactured Cubic Zirconia. Zircon has an impressive double refraction, which means that when it is faceted in the right way, you are able to see twice as many facets and ‘fire’ as you would with another gemstone faceted in the same way. A gemstone’s ‘fire’ is the term that is given to describe the brilliance and the reflecting of multicoloured light throughout the gemstone. Colourless Zircon’s fire is similar to that of Diamond, and for this reason it has and still is used as a more inexpensive alternative to Diamond. Hoewever Zircon also naturally appears in many exciting and bold colours, including Yellow, Green, Blue and a range of Orange, Red and Reddish Brown. The beautiful range of bright Blue is the colour that is the most popular of the coloured Zircon.
